Why Now is the Time to Visit Colombia
Long gone are Colombia’s days of being a playground for Pablo Escobar and his machine-gun toting army. In recent years, Colombia has emerged as a vibrant country with delicious food, friendly people, and a great bang for your tourist buck. Colombia’s even been popping up on lists of best destinations for 2010 and great places for adventure travelers. So forget the US State Department travel warnings and ignore everything you’ve heard about dangerous drug cartels, now is the time to travel to Colombia.
Florida is a popular gateway for traveling to Colombia, and many flights from elsewhere in the US connect here in Fort Lauderdale or Miami, which are less than 3 hours away. Airfare to Colombia can even be quite cheap, going for as low as $200-$300 per person from Florida. Once you’re there, prices are just as easy on the wallet – you can easily find accommodations in a double room for under $20 per night and the average price of a beer is $1.
Though Colombia has come a long way in the last decade or so, you still need to use common sense and take precautions. Don’t wander alone too long after dark, only take registered taxis, and check with your accommodation to find out areas that you should avoid. It’s also wise to pick up some cheap travel insurance, just in case something does go wrong on your trip.
Colombia has become a safe, beautiful country to visit, and one that should be on any travelers list.
